On Wednesday 4th September 2013 Epping St. John’s, the first new secondary school in Epping for over 50 years, opened its doors to its excited new students. After years of planning, designing and building the finishing touches had been made to the multi-million pound building. They entered a unique bespoke learning environment
Epping St. John's has been engineered to be a stunning, aspirational and iconic focal point for the Epping community. At the heart of its design has been the determination to blend with the surrounding rolling countryside and the ancient Epping Forest. Throughout the new building the warmth of the timber finish can be seen from the Birch cladding, to the oak doors, the bespoke classroom furniture and student work benches. This notion of a calm, gentle form can be seen in the smooth curves of the main ‘Street’ and the open and bright learning spaces with their high ceilings and natural light.
This is more than just a new school building but a chance to redefine St. John’s for the 21st Century, building on our impressive exam results, good Ofsted Reports and inclusive ethos. First and foremost, we are a community school committed to serving and supporting the surrounding area leading to the renaming of the school ‘Epping St. John’s’. To support the rebranding of the school we needed first to develop a new logo. We wanted a fresh, innovative, contemporary and distinctive logo for a new forward looking school. The three green tree shapes represent the famous Epping Forest. They are grouped together to symbolise the community and family that is Epping St John’s. The different shapes in turn represent the different ages of our students working together. The rich green symbolises not only the trees and Epping Forest but also life, growth and the wider commitment to the importance of the learning environment. Cutting across this landscape of learning is the unmistakable roof line of the main entrance to Epping St John’s. These lines connect the new building with the historic Epping Forest whilst acting as a pathway for us to follow together for future successes. Our Church of England ethos has been encapsulated through the subtle yet powerful symbolism of turning the ‘t’ in Epping St John’s to the eternal Christian cross. Enshrined within the new logo, the school, and its engaging learning environment are Epping St John’s values of ‘Aspire, Persevere, Succeed’.
